My brother David was an active member of the Hepatitis C support group. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but he passed away unexpectedly early Thursday morning.
David was on vacation in Maui, and after one of the toughest years of his life (being on Interferon, having his father die, losing his girlfriend], things were really starting to turn around for him.
He was tapering off the Interferon and he had just decided to buy a condo and have Maui be his home base. He had a great job lined up for the year as a sound man for the Indigo Girls. After several months of being very depressed, he sounded more upbeat and happy than he had for a long time (my mom talked to him the day he died).
For that, we are so grateful.
David was found by his friend/roommate Ace at 2:30 in the morning. He was slumped over his computer. Ace thought he'd fallen asleep, but noticed blood around David's mouth. He unsuccessfully tried to give David mouth to mouth and CPR. (We are now worried about this friend being exposed to Hepatitis C].
Apparently, a major artery to David's liver burst and the death was instantaneous. We have been assured that he did not suffer.
We are so shocked and in grief, but have been touched by all the people who cared for David, who have been coming out of the wood works.
God bless each of you and I wish you luck in fighting this awful disease.
Tragically, David's death is not an isolated incident. An estimated 10,000 Americans will die each year of liver failure associated with hepatitis C. Only through increased medical research can we begin to control and eventually eradicate this insidious disease. Private support will play a vital role in finding a solution.
Thanks to all, Heather
